Found here are portraits of all ages and many walks of life: vagabonds and hairdressers, cane cutters and highway girls, day laborers and herdsmen, as well as a few of the more prosperous denizens of Mineral de Pozos, where Spear chose to live and build a house. In her perceptive Foreword, Linda Whitney Hobson asserts that Spear “has the gift of speaking directly to the spirits of his subjects, reassuring them, knowing them deeply, then bringing up and out of their innards who-they-are, like dark jewels in a treasure chest.”
