Photographs of Mexico printed in fine screen duotone. The photographs in Visible Spirits have been a labor of love for David M. Spear since his first trips to Mexico in the 1990s. These intensely captivating images, from the years that he traveled and lived in Mexico, show him as much more than a casual observer. No es Nada Come Parece—Nothing Is Ever as It Seems, the book’s subtitle, expresses this reaching beyond the ordinary, to make the often overlooked or unseen visible. Found here are portraits of all ages and many walks of life: vagabonds and hairdressers, cane cutters and highway girls, day laborers and herdsmen, as well as a few of the more prosperous denizens of Mineral de Pozos, where Spear chose to live and build a house. In her perceptive Foreword, Linda Whitney Hobson asserts that Spear “has the gift of speaking directly to the spirits of his subjects, reassuring them, knowing them deeply, then bringing up and out of their innards who-they-are, like dark jewels in a treasure chest.”
