Wataru Kimura - Yoru no Kouen - Document, The Night Park

90

Published in 1981, this rare Japanese documentary explores the hidden activities of people in parks at night.
Written by freelance journalist Wataru Kimura, this book explores the underground world of "observers" and the culture of nocturnal peeking in Showa-era Japan.

Photographs were taken by renowned photographer Kohei Yoshiyuki (1946-), known for pioneering the use of infrared photography to document human activity at night.
Yoshiyuki worked for the International Press Agency before becoming a freelance photographer in 1978.
His work subsequently garnered international acclaim, and in 2007 he held a solo exhibition at the Yossi Miro Gallery in New York.
This book is primarily text, but also includes several striking infrared photographs by Yoshiyuki, including the cover photo.
This book can be considered a companion piece to Yoshiyuki's photography-related book, "Secret Photography."
A valuable addition to collectors of Japanese documentary literature, sociology, and postwar subculture research.
