Anton Heyboer - Een leven als Kunstwerk
The book 'The Three Brides of Anton Heyboer' caused a sensation in 1974. Telegraaf journalist Henk van der Meyden opened doors that remained closed to others, and the reading public in the Netherlands was introduced to the peculiar 'hippie existence' led by the renowned artist in Den Ilp, North Holland, in a stable and some barns with his three wives at the time: Maria, Lotti, and Marike. Van der Meyden's book included 'family snapshots,' which reportedly fulfilled requests from journalists for photos of the commune, which was virtually entirely cut off from the outside world. The great artistic significance of the photos only became clear when the Fotomuseum Den Haag brought together the work of three photographers in late 2010 under the title 'The Tireless Epic,' in which Anton Heyboer was represented alongside Gerard Fieret and Miroslav Tichý. For Anton Heyboer (1924–2005), photography represented an expansion of his artistic scope. He incorporates photographs into collages or adds personal texts to the raw, unfinished prints. Above all, the photographs form visual testimonies of the extraordinary life at Den Ilp as only Heyboer himself could see it, as one grand work of art. However, the lion's share of the photographic production at Den Ilp is the responsibility of his five muses: Maria, Marike, Joke, and in particular Lotti and Petra. For 'Anton Heyboer. A Life as a Work of Art', a selection was made from hundreds of Polaroids and thousands of black-and-white and color negatives from the period 1973–2005. The majority of the selection has been rescanned and cleaned of technical imperfections—dust, scratches, and mold. For the first time, daily life at Den Ilp is brought into the public domain in its full scope, photographed by whoever was operating a camera at that moment.
